During RAW last night
During RAW last night, my boyfriend, Joe, his roommate (also named Joe) and I were talking about our favorite moments in wrestling. Although I’m the youngest, I have been watching wrestling for longer than both of them have been. Surprisingly, however, we had a few things in common: First, Triple H and/or Shawn Michaels were on each of our lists, even when we took it from our “top three” to our “fourth that could take the place of any of the others we just said.” Second, it was hard to stick to our chosen moments once we heard the other person’s; it was like hearing what someone else said made us remember this other really cool thing that happened that would definitely be on the list. Finally, the one we picked as our #1 moment clearly meant something to us. For example, my boyfriend’s favorite involves LOD (Demolition? I really don’t remember) beating their opponents in under 20 seconds. This is his favorite moment because he loves seeing people get FUCKED UP.
Since then, the conversation has had me thinking – what ARE my favorite moments in wrestling? I’ve been able to narrow it down to five, and even though they are numbered, they are not necessarily in any type of order.
1. Sting joins the nWo
I know I just said the numbers most likely don’t mean anything, but for me, this is monumental. For months, Sting had been wearing white and black face paint and hanging out in the rafters with vultures; sometimes he would come down and beat the nWo from pillar to post with just his baseball bat, but sometimes he never came. What was going on? Whose side was Sting on? Well, on this particular night, Sting was supposed to give his answer. The nWo was beating up some of Sting’s friends (most likely Lex Luger and Macho Man, but I can’t really remember) and finally, FINALLY, Sting repelled down from the rafters. Wearing a black t-shirt with a white scorpion on it, he pointed at Hogan and ripped off his t-shirt, revealing a black and white nWo shirt.
The show wasn’t over yet, but young Heather stood up and ran into her bedroom, facedown on her bed… crying her eyes out. For years – hell, for my WHOLE LIFE – I had cheered for Sting, bought the action figures, watched the movies… and he had the chutzpah to turn on me like that? Who the hell did he think he was?
Because I was so upset, my dad had to yell at me to come back in the room because something else was happening. While I never got to see it live, I came back in the room just in time to the replay of Sting ripping off his black and white nWo t-shirt to reveal that while yes, he was joining the nWo, he was actually joining the Wolfpac – essentially, the good guys of the nWo.
2. Triple H Returns
After finishing a match which saw Triple H tear his quadriceps muscle (further proof that wrestlers are better athletes than they’re given credit for), he was out for nearly a year. Before he left, he was the baddest bad guy you could imagine, coming down and nailing people with sledgehammers, well, because he could. This injury, however, was so devastating that even though he finished the match, he couldn’t walk out of the ring of his own accord. He would later describe it as sounding like a gunshot.
So, after nearly a year out of action, everyone was excited about Trips’ upcoming return – even me, and I’ve never made it a secret that I really don’t like the guy. Mostly, everyone was wondering what he was going to look like. Hell, we all the read articles and heard the interviews. Was he really spending 8+ hours in the gym EVERY DAY? Well, when the day finally came, it was astounding. Triple H’s music hit, and every single person in the arena was on their feet, cheering for the Cerebral Assassin. He gets in the ring and tries to talk, but the fans are still cheering. Well, cool, he’s having a Hogan-esque moment. Then they go to commercial and when they come back, the fans are still just as loud as ever and Triple H is (gasp) CRYING! Not bawling his eyes out, but definitely a few tears. What could be better than that?
3. Sting beats Hogan at Starrcade; Hitman as guest ref
This moment is important to me because even though I would never admit it aloud, I’ve always loved Hulk Hogan – good guy, bad guy or indifferent. Of course, I’ve also always loved Sting, so for me, this was some type of fantasy dream match come true.
After some assistance from the nWo, Hogan was able to secure the win and pin Sting for the title. Suddenly, Bret Hart comes running out and tells the referee what happened. The ref pretty much tells him that since he didn’t see it, it didn’t happen – the match is over and he’s standing by his decision. Hart feels that this decision is bullshit so he punches the ref and orders the match to be restarted… which he was allowed to do because he had been a guest ref for a match that took place earlier in the night. Of course, Sting was able to come back and pin Hogan to keep his title.
4. Edge & Hogan win tag team titles
This was a special moment for me simply because I was there. I know I’ve written about his a ton of times in the past, but it was the first and only time I ever saw Hulk Hogan wrestle. On top of that, he was going full force with the whole “Hulkamania is STILL runnin’ wild!” theme and I couldn’t get enough. To be honest, I really don’t remember much about that match – I was too busy freaking out about seeing Hulkamania that I got yelled at to stop standing on my chair because it was dangerous and prevented other people from being able to see what was happening. Whatcha gonna do, brother?
5. Chris Benoit wins World Title
It seems funny to be writing good things about Chris Benoit considering everything that has gone down over the past 2-3 weeks. I won’t get into details because we’ve heard it all before and really, it’s not my place to jump to conclusions before all the reports are gathered and information known.
The end of his career may be marred in confusion now, but nothing can take away the feeling of literally growing up with someone and watching them finally, finally reach the pinnacle of their career. Knowing that he continued to wrestle for 18 years (at the time) without ever holding THE title is incredible enough. How many people do you know would stay at a job for that long without ever getting a raise or promotion? Watching him cry in the ring, surrounded by cheering fans is even better. The cherry on top of the sundae? Seeing him turn around and having Eddie Guerrero, one of his best friends in the whole world, be the first to congratulate him.
So, enough about me. What are YOUR favorite wrestling moments?
